Brioude - The Palaeo-Christian baptistry of Saint-Julian

Brioude, located between Clermont-ferrand and Le Puy, sheltered the tomb of the martyr Julian. This shrine, essentially known thanks to the testimony of Gregory of Tours, was one of the most important in Gaul. Between 2002 and 2005, several preventive and planned excavations were carried out in the vicinity of the Norman/Romanesque basilica of Saint-Julian, built on the location of the earliest structures dedicated to the martyr. The last season made it possible to identify a Palaeo-Christian baptistry.
