The site of hydraulic mills is located 30 kilometers to the west of Besançon, in the municipality of Thervay in the Jura. In 2008, works on the bullet train railway lines linking Dijon to Mulhouse enabled archaeologists to excavate two hydraulic mills located a kilometer to the south of the village of Thervay, on an ancient branch of the Gravelon river, one of the small affluents on the left banks of the Ognon stream. The archaeology of hydraulic mills of the early and middle medieval periods is very rarely a focus of studies, so the stakes of this rescue fieldwork were in themselves quite momentous.
